Christopher E. Smith spent forty years as an award-winning teacher of law, public policy, U.S. government & politics, and criminal justice at Michigan State University, the University of Akron, and the University of Connecticut-Hartford. ​He is the author of twenty-five books and more than 130 scholarly articles and book chapters. ​His varied experiences and qualifications include admission to practice law in Ohio (currently inactive status), Democratic candidate for Congress, and acting executive director of the Michigan Coalition to Prevent Gun Violence.
